After a three-alarm fire decimated a supermarket in Whitestone Tuesday night, Queens experienced another major fire Wednesday night when a furniture warehouse in Sunnyside went ablaze.
The fire started at about 7:20 p.m. at a warehouse belonging to New York Custom Interior Millwork Corp located at 43-34 37th St., the Fire Department reported. The fire quickly spread, likely fueled by wood, plywood and other furniture-making materials. The warehouse likely wasn’t occupied at the time of the fire, according to an FDNY spokesperson.
The five-alarm fire was extinguished at 11:22 p.m. thanks to the efforts of 168 firefighters on the scene.
Two firefighters suffered minor injuries, while two others suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries and were taken to the area’s hospitals.
An FDNY spokesperson told QNS that cause of the fire is under investigation, but is not considered suspicious.
The city officials warned locals last night to stay indoors to prevent inhaling the smoke. According to reports, the smoke sent the acrid smell all the way to the Upper West Side and Harlem.
