The man who shot and killed 22-year-old St. John’s University student Tiarah Poyau during the J’Ouvert festival in Brooklyn on Monday, Sept. 5, has been arrested police announced.
According to police, Regenald Moise, 20, of Brooklyn, was charged with 2nd-degree murder, 2nd-degree criminal possession of a weapon and reckless endangerment in the slaying of Poyau.
Poyau, who aspired to become an accountant, was celebrating at the J’Ouvert parade — an overnight festival signaling the start of Carnival throughout the Caribbean diaspora, which is celebrated throughout Crown Heights, Prospect Lefferts Gardens and Flatbush — at 4:14 a.m. Monday morning when she was fatally shot at close range in the head outside of 44 Empire Blvd. on the Crown Heights/Prospect Lefferts Gardens border, police reported.
According to law enforcement agents, officers from the 71st Precinct responded to the 911 call of the shooting. EMS units also responded and transported Poyau to Kings County Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
Less than a half hour prior to Poyau being shot, 17-year-old Tyreke Borel was shot and killed in a separate shooting approximately one block away, cops said.
Both shootings come after Mayor Bill de Blasio called for increased security measures at this year’s festivities after two men — one of them Governor Andrew Cuomo’s aide, Carey Gabay — were fatally shot at the 2015 J’Ouvert parade.
Over 3,000 police officers were on hand at the parade. The NYPD also brought 45 cameras, more than 250 light stanchions and posters telling people “do not shoot anyone” that were hung across the neighborhoods in order to bolster safety at the parade, DNAinfo reported.
