With the basketball season upon us, the Maspeth High School (MHS) teams are looking to get back to the championship game this year, but they need your help to do so.
The MHS Argonauts basketball teams are looking for donations from the community to get gear for the upcoming season, to help pay tournament fees, a team project adventure trip to help build player-to-player relationships and teamwork, and more, said MHS boys varsity basketball head coach Anastasia Bitis said.
“The last thing we are trying to get is a shooting machine this year,” Bitis said. “Having a shooting machine will help us with form and continuity in our shooting. We will be able to set goals for our guys which will motivate them to work harder to see the results that they want.”
Last season, the boys varsity team suffered a heartbreaking loss in the Elite Eight round of a tournament where they lost a nail-biter in overtime.
“This season we are determined to get back to the championship game,” Bitis said. “We learned a lot from our playoff run this year and the guys are motivated by those end-of-season emotions that they felt last year.”
The Argonauts’ season kicks off on Tuesday, Nov. 22, with a non-league game against Aviation High School at 4:30 p.m. at home. The players will be dedicating that game to Ryan Halligan — a student who killed himself in 2003 after being bullied in real life and online — and his family to raise awareness for bullying.
