SPRINGFIELD GARDENS Customs and Border Protection officials captured someone trying to smuggle four pounds of cocaine into the country in pairs of sneakers
On Feb. 9 at John F. Kennedy International Airport, CBP officers stopped Amazaiah Hohenkirk, a Guyanese citizen who arrived on a flight from Georgetown, Guyana. After inspecting him and his luggage, officers found four pairs of sneakers and two pairs of shoes containing white powder. Subsequent tests determined the white substance was cocaine.
The street value of the four-pound haul was estimated to be about $67,000, according to the CBP.
Hohenkirk was arrested for the importation of a controlled substance and turned over to Homeland Security Investigations, the CBP said. He faces federal narcotics smuggling charges.
