The transformation of Diversity Plaza into a vibrant public space is expected to be completed by June 2018, according to officials who presented plans at the Community Board 3 meeting Thursday.

Diversity Plaza, located at 37th Road between 73rd Street and 74th Street, was created as part of the Department of Transportation’s Plaza Program in 2011 and its current upgrade is currently being overseen by the Department of Design and Construction (DDC).

The project, which began April 17, will cost $4,450,000, according to officials.

The aim of the revamp is to improve vehicular and pedestrian traffic, beautify the area with plaza enhancements and add street lighting.

The plan involves adding trees, bike parking, art space, moveable planters and movable furniture.

The construction should have little impact on the community, according to the DDC. Water will be shut off periodically, but residents will be notified 72 and 24 hours in advance.

If water service is not restored by the time indicated on the shutoff notice, residents should contact the Community Construction Liaison or 311 if after hours.

The construction may also cause some pedestrian and traffic interruptions, according to the DDC. Some streets may be closed, and driveway access, curbside parking and parking may be temporarily restricted.

The DDC will provide brochures, bi-monthly newsletters, special advisory notices and e-mail alerts.
