A non-profit medical provider that serves thousands of low-income families in western Queens now has an office in Astoria.
On May 5, The Floating Hospital opened a clinic in Astoria at 8-13 Astoria Blvd. The clinic is open Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. For appointments call 718-545-0934.
This is the Floating Hospital’s third location. It opened its main clinic at 41-43 Crescent street in 2009, before adding another facility in Queensbridge Houses in 2012.
The Queensbridge Houses clinic was viewed as such a success that people in Astoria began asking for a facility, according to Steve Whalen, director of outreach and communications for the Floating Hospital. He said that there will be a grand opening for the Astoria location in September.
The new clinic offers primary, dental and mental healthcare, free transportation and health education. Patients can go for basic medical examinations, wellness visits, and immunizations, gynecological examinations, pregnancy testing and prenatal care referrals, cardiology services, confidential HIV testing and counseling, dental examinations, cleanings, scaling and oral cancer screenings, fillings, extractions, root canals, and crowns, psychiatric and psychological screening, evaluation, and treatment, specialty services for pediatric, family, and geriatric psychiatry and psychology and much more.
The Floating Hospital was created in 1866 as New York City’s first charity pediatric clinic on a ship docked in lower Manhattan. The institution was based on a docked boat until 2001, before getting temporary quarters in Manhattan. In 2009, it moved to a permanent home on Crescent street.
The Floating Hospital claims to be New York City’s largest healthcare provider to families living in homeless shelters and domestic violence safe houses.
