The NYPD joined forces with The Legacy Center in Ridgewood and the Detective Rafael Ramos Foundation last weekend to provide school-aged children with free backpacks filled to the brim with school supplies.
More than 1,500 backpacks were handed out to children on Saturday, Aug. 5, during the giveaway at a block party event at Wyckoff Avenue and Centre Street, where the community got the chance to meet and hangout with NYPD officers.
Ramos was a volunteer with The Legacy Center, always looking for ways to give back to the community he was sworn to protect. He was also a member of Christ Tabernacle Church in Glendale.
On Dec. 20, 2014, Ramos and his partner Detective Wenjian Liu were shot to death while sitting inside their patrol car in Brooklyn, a dual assassination that shocked the entire city and country. More than 20,000 law enforcement officers and others gathered outside Christ Tabernacle Church a week later for Ramos’ funeral.
“We give back because that is the person Rafael was, always helping others so naturally we wanted to join The Legacy Center in their efforts,” a representative from the Detective Rafael Ramos Foundation said.
The Detective Rafael Ramos Foundation will again partner with The Legacy Center for another backpack giveaway on Tuesday, Sept. 12, and are still looking for donations. If you would like to donate to the next drive, visit detectiverafaelramos.org.
