A Woodhaven bar will be the first to debut a premium whiskey in Queens next week.
The historic Neirs Tavern, located at 87-48 78th St., will host a launch party for Uncle Nearest Premium Whiskey, an award-winning spirit that has history rooting back to the nineteenth century, on Aug. 16 from 6 to 8 p.m.
During the event, guests can enjoy free whiskey and specialty cocktail tastings and participate in a raffle for a signature whiskey gift basket. Walk-ins are welcome but it is encouraged that attendees grab a free ticket on Eventbrite.
Inspired by Nathan “Nearest” Green, a former slave in Lynchburg, Tennessee and the first African-American master distiller on record in the United States, Uncle Nearest Premium Whiskey truly encompasses a Premium Aged and Tennessee Silver product. Distilled and packaged right in Tennessee, Uncle Nearest has been named one of the Top 5 Whiskies in the World by Cigar & Spirits Magazine and has won numerous awards, including the gold medal at the San Francisco World Spirits.
It is believed that in addition to having helped perfect the Lincoln County Process, a special charcoal filtering method required to be considered Tennessee Whiskey, Green is credited to be the first master distiller for Jack Daniels and to have taught Jack Daniel the whiskey-making process that made him famous.
In hosting the event, the organizers are looking to bring together two historic brands and share the untold stories of Uncle Nearest and Neirs Tavern that many have left go unrecognized.
“This is bigger than race,” said Loycent Gordon, owner of Historic Neirs Tavern. “Uncle Nearest is the story of Neirs Tavern, Queens and many of the great places and people, like us, that haven’t received the recognition we deserve.”
