Two officers escaped without injury from their police cruiser after it caught fire along a Richmond Hill street on Friday morning, police reported.
Law enforcement sources said the members of the 106th Precinct were inside their patrol car at the corner of 115th Street and 107th Avenue just after 8 a.m. on Aug. 24 when they smelled smoke.
Sensing trouble, authorities said, the officers got out of the cruiser, which subsequently burst into flames.
Firefighters rushed to the scene and put out the fire within a few minutes, the New York Post reported. Police sources said the cause of the fire is believed to be mechanical.
Aside from damaged equipment and gear — including the officers’ cellphones and a license plate reader — neither cop was injured, sources said.
