A Richmond Hill community center hosted a camp to help kids unlock their inner computer scientist.
From July 23 to Aug. 2, the One Stop Richmond Hill Community Center hosted a STEM-based summer camp. Children from third through fifth grade came to the center to learn computer science technology and were encouraged to participate in activities which included the use of state-of-the-art technology.
Throughout the course of the camp, students researched various science topics and and watched live video conferences from NASA with students across America. The students also participated in interactive video conferences with places across the country, including the Houston Space Center, Alaska Sea Life, and a mystery Skype with the Wyoming State Museum.
With their research and use of interactive video conferences, the students were able to build gliders and have a competition between themselves. They were also able to play educational games together, build remote control machines and create solar system models.
At the end of the two weeks, the camp held a party to celebrate the success of the students and to award them with a certificate of completion.
The students and staff of the program thanked Assemblyman Mike Miller and Councilman Eric Ulrich for the funding in order to make the program possible.
