The Jamaica Center for Arts and Learning will celebrate the ninth annual Making Moves Dance Festival on the weekend of Sept. 21-22.

Performances will be held at the Jamaica Performing Arts Center. Outdoor shows are free at 6 p.m. on Friday and Saturday while indoor shows cost $10 at 7:30 p.m. on both nights.

The festival offers Jamaica residents an opportunity to experience the creative work of over 15 choreographers and 45 dance artists who will perform various forms of dance over the weekend.

The Sept. 21 performances include new and reshaped works from Laura Shapiro of Quicksilver Dance and work from JKing Dance Company. Headlining artists on Sept. 22 include the world premiere of work by Laura Peterson and new works by Nai-Ni Chen and Mari Meade Dance Collective.

The Making Moves Dance Festival will also have events at the JCAL studio Saturday afternoon, with dance classes from noon to 3 p.m. and a community gallery open from 3 to 5 p.m. The gallery will include a dance discussion with special guests and choreographers.

The theme of this year’s festival is “Presenting Bold Ideas.” The festival aims to support new and young dance companies by offering a platform to present on and providing the opportunity to work with other established artists. The event will also begin JCAL’s 2018 flagship dance season.

Attendees can RSVP for outdoor and afternoon events and buy tickets for the indoor performances on the Making Moves Dance Festival 2018 Eventbrite page at https://bit.ly/JCALMMDF2018.
