A Middle Village man accused of attacking two men in Brooklyn and yelling anti-gay slurs at them in an apparent hate crime turned himself into police on Wednesday morning, police sources said.
Brandon McNamara, 25, of 70th Street allegedly confronted two men at a location on Metropolitan Avenue near Union Avenue in Williamsburg at 12:55 a.m. on Sunday morning, Sept. 23.
Law enforcement sources said McNamara allegedly uttered “anti-sexual orientation” remarks at the victims, ages 29 and 34, before going on the attack.
According to authorities, McNamara allegedly punched the 34-year-old man in the face, knocking him out briefly, then shoved the 29-year-old man against the tree, also causing him to lose consciousness. He then fled the scene in an unknown direction.
Officers from the 90th Precinct responded to the incident. Paramedics brought the 34-year-old man to Bellevue Hospital for treatment of a fractured shoulder, while the 27-year-old man was taken to Woodhull Medical Center with a broken finger.
After the NYPD released McNamara’s image to the press in an effort to track him down, a source familiar with the investigation stated, McNamara decided to turn himself into police. His attorney was with him when he arrived at the 90th Precinct at 8 a.m. on Sept. 26.
McNamara faces two counts each of second-degree assault as a hate crime, second-degree assault, second-degree aggravated harassment as a hate crime, and first- and second-degree harassment as hate crimes.
