State Assemblywoman Nily Rozic (D-Flushing) announced last week that she has allocated $250,000 in state funding toward renovation of a Flushing senior center.
Selfhelp Community Services Inc. will use the funds to upgrade the stage and auditorium at the Selfhelp Benjamin Rosenthal-Prince Street Senior Center at 45-33 Kissena Blvd.
“Selfhelp Benjamin Rosenthal Senior Center serves as a cornerstone of the Flushing community through the vital services it offers from health and wellness to educational programming,” said Rozic. “It is my privilege to support the center and its ongoing work to provide seniors with access to the space and resources needed to ensure a healthy, active, and empowered quality of life.”
The funding will provide upgrades to the auditorium, including the AC system, floor, lighting and sound systems and the additional enhancements that support the dynamic and meaningful programming at the center, said Sandy Myers, vice president, of external relations and communications, at Selfhelp Community Services.
“The center serves as a home away from home to more than 4,000 members from throughout the city, serving some 450 older adults each day. These renovations will better enable Selfhelp to continue to provide high-quality programming that supports independence and dignity for older adults,” Myers said.
U.S. Rep. Grace Meng (D-Flushing), who said senior centers play an essential role in helping older adults stay active and social, showed her support for Rozic’s contribution to the center.
“The $250,000 allocated by Assemblywoman Rozic will be critical to upgrading and renovating a key part of the Selfhelp Benjamin Rosenthal Senior Center so that this wonderful facility can serve local seniors even better,” said Meng.
