A 177,000 square foot development is expected to go up in Rego Park, a block away from Queens Boulevard, according to published reports.
Kenny Liu, a Flushing-based developer, plans to build a residential complex on a vacant lot next to the now-shuttered Our Lady of the Angelus Catholic Academy.
The development site, located next to 98-05 63rd St., was the former soccer field used by school. It is one block from the Rego Center Mall and a 5-minute walk to the M line on Queens Boulevard.
Liu recently bought the vacant lot from the Church of Our Lady of the Angelus for $30 million, according to real estate blog pincusco.com.
The school building and the vacant field were previously owned by the church as one site. The church split the parcel in two shortly after the academy closed in 2018, stemming from a decline in enrollment.
Liu is unlikely to need a zoning variance to complete the project, since the site is located in a R7 zone that caters to high-density residential buildings, according to a City Department of Planning spokesman.
The property is surrounded by several other high-rise apartment buildings.
Liu has several developments in Flushing. He is also behind a 55,000 square foot condo development that was recently completed at 97-45 63rd Drive.
