Two Queens lawmakers are teaming up to host a free rain barrel giveaway in Glendale next month.

State Senator Joseph Addabbo and Assemblymember Mike Miller, in conjunction with the New York City Department of Environmental Protection, will be giving away free 55-gallon plastic rain barrels to local residents on Saturday June 8.

The event will take place at the Yeshiva Godolah Seminary, located at 74-10 88th Street, between 10 a.m. and 12 p.m. Residents who want to guarantee themselves a rain barrel will need to preregister by calling Addabbo’s office prior to the event.

Residents who do not register in time will still be able to pick up a barrel between 12 p.m. and 1 p.m. on a first-come first-serve basis.

The barrels, which attach to rain gutters to collect and store the water, are intended to help residents cut down on water use. The rainwater that is collected can be used for jobs around the house, saving the use of fresh water.

“When residents use these rain barrels to capture excess rainwater, it can have a major impact on our environment here in the city,” Addabbo said. “By using the stored rainwater for household tasks such as watering their garden or washing their car instead of regular tap water, residents not only preserve their drinking water, but they can also save some money on their water bills.”

Residents wishing to reserve a barrel can reach Addabbo’s office at 718-738-1111. There will be a limit of one rain barrel per household.
