Far Rockaway resident Jahvon Frazier was sentenced Thursday in Queens Supreme Court to 30 years to life in prison for killing a young father of three from the neighborhood in an unprovoked shooting in August 2020, as well as a previous assault.
Frazier, 31, of Beach Channel Drive, was convicted by a jury last month of murder in the second degree, two counts of criminal possession of a weapon in the second degree and assault in the second degree.
According to the charges, at around 10:30 p.m. on the night of Aug. 25, 2020, Frazier was seen on surveillance video hanging out with a group of men behind 14-30 Redfern Ave. Kenneth Carmichael, 30, of Far Rockaway, encountered the group and Frazier, without provocation, pulled out a handgun and opened fire on Carmichael. As he ran, Frazier gave chase and continued firing. Carmichael sustained fatal gunshot wounds to the torso including injuries to his right lung, heart, liver and stomach. During a previous dispute in May 2019, Frazier had slashed Carmichael.
Detectives from the Regional Fugitive Task Force tracked down Frazier in North Carolina and he was arrested in October 2020 and extradited back to Queens.
“Three children will have to grow up without their father because of this unnecessary tragedy,” Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz said. “Ending these senseless shootings is the reason that we must continue to fight to get every illegal gun off our streets.”
Queens Supreme Court Justice Kenneth Holder sentenced Frazier to 25 years to life in prison for the murder, along with a five-year sentence for assault and five years of post-release supervision.
