Grupo Rebolu, an Afro-Colombian ensemble whose music is loaded with energy, history and dance will perform in a family-friendly concert for all ages at Flushing Town Hall on Saturday, Aug. 5.
“We are thrilled to welcome back Grupo Rebolu to the Flushing Town Hall stage! Rebolu’s music and lyrics explore real world experiences that visitors of all backgrounds can relate to and the infectious Colombian rhythms will draw you to the dance floor — regardless of your age or ability! Bring the family for an amazing dance party,” said Gabrielle Hamilton, Flushing Town Hall’s director of Education & Public Programs.
The performance will begin with a 3 p.m. dance workshop led by KFSD’s dance director and choreographer Karla Florez. Attendees will learn the popular rhythms of Puya, Chandé and Cumbia with her method “We are Cumbia, We are family.” The interactive dance workshop will also feature dancers Valeria Olaya-Florez, Valentina Olaya-Florez, Danny Acosta, and Fewis Pacheco.
At 4:30 p.m., Grupo Rebolu’s concert will invite audience members to put their new dance moves to the test as they enjoy an infectious battery of percussion, commanding gaita flute melodies, and beautiful vocal stylings.
Originally founded by vocalist/composer/gaitero Ronald Polo and master folkloric percussionist Morris Cañate, the duo was soon joined by Johanna Castañeda as lead vocalist. Together they have been promoting the rich musical traditions of their ancestors, the Afro-descendants of Colombia’s Caribbean coast. The group’s unique reinterpretations of traditional rhythms celebrate a thriving and dynamic Afro-Colombian culture.
Audiences across Europe and North America have been unable to resist the urge to jump up and dance along to their music. Grupo Rebolu’s past shows have included dates at Lincoln Center, Montana Folk Fest, Richmond Folk Fest, VA National Folk Fest, Montreux Jazz Fest, The Kennedy Center, Library of Congress and SXSW.
