The NYPD released the crime stats for the 28-day period of Sept. 24 to Oct. 22 in northern and southern Queens and, while the numbers show there was little change year-over-year in major crimes, there was an overall increase in crimes across the borough. Some of the notable trends in the report are increases in cases of robberies, felony assault and grand larceny of automobiles and a decrease in burglaries.
Robbery cases in northern Queens went up from 149 to 171. Jackson Heights, East Elmhurst and North Corona, which are all within the confines of the 115th Precinct, saw the biggest increase, from 22 to 39. Robberies also went up in southern Queens, from 94 to 105.
One recent notable robbery that occurred in Jackson Heights, which occurred in the early hours of Oct. 3, involved two men who impersonated police officers. While one of the perpetrators was taken into custody, police are still searching for the second suspect.
In northern Queens, felony assaults rose from 189 in 2022 to 235 this year. The largest increase in these cases was seen in Corona and Elmhurst, where cases rocketed up from 45 to 63. In southern Queens, felony assaults increased year-over-year from 172 to 222. The largest increase there was seen in Far Rockaway and Bayswater, where cases rose from 10 to 18.
Grand larceny of automobiles increased from 194 to 287 in northern Queens. Downtown and East Flushing, Queensboro Hill, College Point, Malba, Whitestone, Beechhurst and Bay Terrace, which are all within the confines of the 109th Precinct, had the largest increase, from 35 to 60. In southern Queens, the number of cases rose from 131 to 164. The most significant increase was seen in Ozone Park, South Ozone Park, Lindenwood, Howard Beach and Old Howard Beach, where cases rose from 17 to 30.
Burglaries dropped year-over-year in all of Queens. In northern Queens, cases went down from 174 to 151. The significant decline in cases within the confines of the 109th Precinct, from 67 to 41, contributed immensely to the decline. In southern Queens, burglaries declined significantly, from 139 to 86.
There was a significant decline in grand larceny cases across northern Queens, plummeting from 639 to 514. The most notable downward trend was seen in Corona and Elmhurst. Cases there went down from 138 last year to 86 this year. While not nearly as pronounced, there was also a decline in grand larceny cases in southern Queens, from 291 to 276.
There wasn’t much overall change in murder and rape cases across northern and southern Queens. Murder cases stayed relatively the same across the board in both northern and southern Queens. Not a single precinct experienced any change in northern Queens, with three total cases both this year and last year. Southern Queens saw just one murder case this year after experiencing three last year. Rape cases in northern Queens went up from 13 to 18. In southern Queens, rape cases went down from 13 to 8.
The northern Queens precincts include the 104th (Ridgewood, Glendale, Middle Village and Maspeth), 108th (Long Island City, Sunnyside and Woodside), 109th (Downtown and East Flushing, Queensboro Hill, College Point, Malba, Whitestone, Beechhurst and Bay Terrace), 110th (Corona and Elmhurst), 111th (Bayside, Douglaston, Little Neck, Auburndale, Hollis Hills and Fresh Meadows), 112th (Forest Hills and Rego Park), 114th (Astoria, Long Island City, Woodside and Jackson Heights) and 115th (Jackson Heights, East Elmhurst and North Corona).
The southern Queens precincts are the 100th (Arverne, Belle Harbor, Breezy Point, Broad Channel, Neponsit, Rockaway Park, Rockaway Beach and Roxbury), 101st (Far Rockaway and Bayswater), 102nd (Kew Gardens, Richmond Hill East, Richmond Hill, Woodhaven and the northern part of Ozone Park), 103rd (downtown Jamaica Business District, Hollis Park Gardens, Hollis, Lakewood and Jamaica), 105th (Queens Village, Cambria Heights, Laurelton, Rosedale, Springfield Gardens, Bellerose, Glen Oaks, New Hyde Park and Floral Park), 106th (Ozone Park, South Ozone Park, Lindenwood, Howard Beach and Old Howard Beach), 107th (Fresh Meadows, Cunningham Heights and Hilltop Village) and 113th (St. Albans, Hollis, Springfield Gardens, South Ozone Park, South Jamaica, Addisleigh Park and Locust Manor).
