Los Angeles-based dance group Bodytraffic is coming to the Queens Theatre in Flushing Meadows Corona Park for three performances scheduled for Saturday Jan. 13 and Sunday Jan. 14.
The group performed at the theater during the 2017/18 season, and Executive Director of the Queens Theater Taryn Sacramone said the organization is looking forward to welcoming Bodytraffic back this month.
“Audiences will experience a high energy, thrilling, and thought-provoking performance. It’s a beautiful way to start a new year!,” she said.
The performances are particularly special to the Artistic Director and founder of Bodytraffic, Tina Finkelman Berkett, since they are being held in Berkett’s home borough. She is originally from Whitestone.
“There’s nothing quite like performing in Queens. I have so much pride in what we have accomplished as a group and I think a lot of that is down to where I grew up and my family,” she said.
Berkett said that all of the shows will be family friendly and that the goal of the performances is to instill an appreciation of dance into the audience members.
“We uphold a really high quality of work and what binds us together is a really deep love for dance. At Bodytraffic the dancers want to both enjoy what they’re doing and also allow the audience to experience something that is whimsical and playful that they can enjoy,” she said.
Berkett, who started Bodytraffic in 2007 when she was 23, always had a deep love for music and dance since she was eight years old when a dance teacher believed in her talents.
“These shows are really for anyone who has been a skeptical dance audience member in the past and hopefully they will learn to love dance. There is music in the show for everyone,” she said.
Performances on the night will include music inspired by Peggy Lee, James Brown and Dean Martin, with a mixture of group performances and solo dances.
Audiences can expect ‘A Million Voices’ choreographed by Matthew Neenan, which is inspired by American singer Peggy Lee; ‘Snap’ choreographed by Micaela Taylor, inspired by the crowds of Los Angeles; and ‘Blue Until June’ choreographed by Trey McIntyre.
The performances will be taking place on Saturday Jan. 13 at 2 p.m. and 8 p.m., and on Sunday Jan. 14 at 3 p.m. Tickets range in price from $32-42 and can be purchased online from the Queens Theatre website.
