The New York Attorney General’s Office of Special Investigations (OSI) on Tuesday launched a probe into the fatal shooting of an Edgemere man on Monday, Feb. 12 following an encounter with the NYPD.

Police from the 101st Precinct in Far Rockaway responded to reports of shots fired at the Ocean Bay apartments located at 409 Beach 51st St. at around 10:54 a.m. After arriving at the fourth-floor apartment, officers encountered a 26-year-old man, who was allegedly holding what appeared to be a gun, according to the OSI. The officers ordered him to drop the gun and when he failed to do so, an officer fired his service weapon striking him in the stomach. EMS rushed Parirchet to Jamaica Hospital Medical Center where he was pronounced dead a short while later. Officers recovered a BB gun at the scene.

Pursuant to New York State Executive Law Section 70-b, OSI assesses every incident reported to it where a police officer or a peace officer, including a correction officer, may have caused the death of a person by an act or omission. Under the law, the officer may be on-duty or off-duty, and the decedent may be armed or unarmed. Additionally, the deceased may or may not be in custody or incarcerated. If OSI’s assessment indicates an officer may have caused the death, OSI proceeds to conduct a full investigation of the incident.
