A man who was walking along the Grand Central Parkway early Sunday morning was struck and killed by the driver of an SUV after stepping into oncoming traffic.

A man was struck and killed while walking along the Grand Central Parkway in Forest Hills during the early morning of Sunday, May 12.

The driver of a 2018 Toyota Rav4 SUV was traveling eastbound in the left-hand lane of the Grand Central Parkway just before 1 a.m., approaching Exit 11 for Jewel Avenue and 69th Road when the walker stepped off the center median into the left-hand lane of travel where the collision occurred.

Police from the 112th Precinct in Forest Hills responded to a 911 call of a pedestrian struck and found the victim lying on the roadway unconscious and unresponsive with head and body trauma. EMS rushed the victim to Jamaica Hospital Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead, police said.

The 22-year-old driver of the Rav4 SUV remained on the scene. There are no arrests and the investigation by the NYPD Highway District’s Collision Investigation Squad remains ongoing.

The identity of the deceased is being withheld pending proper family notification.
