The Queens Public Library (QPL) in Cambria Heights is giving teens a perfect prom experience during their Prom X QPL giveaway event this Saturday, May 11 from 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Families can go to the teen center at the library, located at 218-13 Linden Blvd., and pick up a free dress and accessories to wear to prom.
The prom dress giveaway is the first of its kind for QPL. Prom X QPL’ s goal is to help high school students minimize the expensive cost of attending prom. The giveaway will feature an array of fun activities to celebrate the ecstatic students, including music, free giveaways, photo ops and other surprises.
Last month, community members showed support for the giveaway initiative by donating new and gently used gowns and accessories, including shoes, jewelry, handbags and sealed and unused makeup items, at a dozen QPL locations throughout the borough.
Registration is required to participate in the giveaway, and items are only available for students who are attending prom this spring.
The giveaway is part of QPL’s ongoing commitment to teen programming. Last year QPL received support from Mayor Eric Adams and private donors to upgrade four existing tech-focused teen centers in the Far Rockaway, Jamaica, Cambria Heights and Flushing branches. Additionally, QPL opened a teen center at the Long Island City branch to help teens gain support from the educational and social impacts they faced during the COVID-19 pandemic.
