Pridefest celebrating diversity in comics and beyond at Flushing Town Hall June 29

Flushing Town Hall is set to present an exciting Pridefest for creatives to enjoy with the Women in Comics Collective International (WinC) Creative Conference: Pridefest, on Saturday, June 29. 

The event at 137-35 Northern Blvd. in Flushing will highlight the work of women and LGBTQ+ people of color who work in the comics, publishing, gaming media, education and multimedia industries.

Scheduled to run from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., the WinC: Pridefest will feature an array of panel discussions to engage and inspire creatives.

The event is sponsored by the Power of Priya through a grant from the NYC Department of Cultural Affairs (DCLA). The Power of Priya is a comic that features India’s first female superhero and has received recognition from UN Women as a champion of gender equality. Additionally, the event is sponsored by Flushing Town Hall Arts Grants for Queens 2024. 

Founded in 2012 by Regine L. Sawyer, a comic book writer, publisher and editor, WinC aims to highlight the creativity and craftwork of marginalized voices, emphasizing women of color and LGBTQ+ folks of color in various creative industries. Sawyer, who resides in New York City, has written for various news outlets and publishing companies, including  Marvel Comics, DC Comics, Time Magazine, Oni Press, The Freelancer’s Union, Comic Book Resources, Graphic Policy and more.

Below is a rundown of workshops and panels for the Pridefest event:

10:30-11:30: Creatives in Comics and Gaming

Join comic book artists, gaming artists and writers in a panel sponsored by Priya. Panelists will have a discussion on their careers and creative inspirations.

11:40 – 12:40: Sequential Storytelling Workshop

Join artist and writer Savannah Zambrano for a workshop on the Art of Sequential Storytelling.

12:50 – 1:50: Writing for Comics Workshop

Vita Ayala is set to host a workshop providing an introduction to writing comic book scripts, from idea creation to outlines to full scripts.

2:00 – 3:00: Pop Culture and Melanated Queerness

Join Queer Pop Culture and Journalism professionals in a conversation about the current state of the multimedia industry. 

3:10 – 4:10: Metaphysical Movement: Meditation for the Creative Mind

Executive Function and Intuitive Meditation Coach Ilka Pinheiro will conduct her signature workshop, which focuses on meditation practices for melanated and other marginalized peoples.
