The Citibank branch located at 78-09 Metropolitan Ave in Middle Village officially closed its doors last month, leaving the bustling business corridor with only a handful of remaining banking options.
Citibank, the consumer banking division of Citigroup, officially closed the branch on Friday, June 28, marking the end of the branch’s run in Middle Village and representing the corporation’s effort to reduce its retail locations.
A spokesperson for Citibank said the closure of the Middle Village branch stems from a shift in customer behavior.
“As part of ongoing efforts to optimize our branch network, we decided to close our location at 7809 Metropolitan Ave. in Middle Village on June 28,” a Citibank spokesperson said in a statement. “While physical branches continue to play an important role, we are closely engaged with our customers and when we see their patterns and behaviors change, we adjust to best serve their needs and meet them where they are.”
Citibank’s Middle Village customers have been notified that the closest branch is 2 miles away at 51-10 Metropolitan Ave. in Ridgewood.
The closure of the Middle Village branch is no aberration. Many retail banks across the country are closing branches in a market where digital banking has taken over.
Earlier this year, Bank of America, Wells Fargo and Citibank announced the closing of branches.
The remaining banking options on Metropolitan Avenue, in Middle Village, include the Cross County Savings Bank and TD Bank.
