The city will start construction on a new high school in College Point this month, transforming the former St. Agnes Academic High School into a modern school called 510Q that will serve approximately 600 students.

The NYC School Construction Authority (SCA) notified the nearby community about the upcoming early package work, including asbestos abatement. The agency noted that a third-party consultant would oversee asbestos removal to ensure compliance and conduct air sampling tests.

“We appreciate your understanding and patience while we perform the work necessary to create a new high school in College Point,” read the letter from Benjamin Goodman, External Affairs Manager for SCA.

Local Council Member Vickie Paladino, who represents the area, relayed the message to her constituents to ensure that they are not alarmed if they notice construction work underway in the building.

We are extremely excited to see this work begin, and I hope that you all share that excitement,” said Paladino in the announcement on X

She added that a total renovation of the outside and inside of the building is scheduled to begin in September. In June, Goodman shared renderings of the new high school, featuring proposed views of the cafeteria and gymnasium.

Paladino noted that the school on 124th Street, which she says will seat 599 students, is a much-needed addition to the College Point community.

St. Agnes Academic High School, an all-girls private Roman Catholic School, permanently closed its doors at the end of the 2021 school year due to financial difficulties.

While the early package work is scheduled to wrap up in December 2024, the high school likely will not be fully ready to open until September 2027.
