An Elmhurst man died Monday, two days after he was found lying on the Whitestone Expressway near Citi Field by a Queens EMS crew who were driving their ambulance near Willets Point Boulevard on the night of Saturday, Sept. 7.

The 29-year-old victim was discovered unconscious and unresponsive in the right lane of the southbound Whitestone Expressway with injuries that appeared to be consistent with being struck by a vehicle, police said, adding that there were no vehicles present at the scene.

The EMS crew rushed him to New York-Presbyterian Queens Hospital, where he was listed in critical condition. Police from the 110th Precinct responded to the Flushing hospital just before midnight and identified the victim as Diego Armijos Torres of Dongan Avenue.

He died from his injuries on Monday, Sept. 9, police said. There are no arrests and the investigation remains ongoing by the NYPD Highway District’s Collision Investigation Squad.
