It was a parade that was truly out of this world!
Last Saturday, Sept. 14, Far Rockaway’s annual Dog Parade transformed the beach as dogs and their families strutted down the boardwalk in costumes. The event kicked off at 11 a.m. at Beach 108th Street, with furry friends and their humans walking the route down to Beach 94th Street, where the celebration continued with a Pet Fair at the Amphitheater.
“It’s a beautiful sunny day. Rockaway shines at the summer’s tail end in September,” said event organizer Dana Humphrey. The event was attended by local Assemblywoman Stacey Pheffer Amato, who said, “Perfect weather, best community, and we have the best dogs. It’s a great way for the community to get together.”
This year’s theme, “Outer Space,” brought together community members in a creative celebration featuring dogs dressed as astronauts, aliens, and more. The parade wasn’t just about fun, though—it was also a fundraiser for ARF ARF, a local charity dedicated to improving the lives of animals in need.
An esteemed panel of judges evaluated the canine ensembles. The lineup included Russell Siegel, known as “The Wallpaper Artist” for his unique creative flair, beloved local personality Lisa Villetto, and Eric McManus from the soon-to-open “Sal y Lima” restaurant, a well-known advocate for local causes.
The grand prize, a one-year membership to Trusted House Sitters, went to Bentley, a Scottish terrier and well-dressed space explorer with a helmet, a leather jacket, and heart glasses. “It was a beautiful day at Rockaway Beach,” exclaimed Yasmin, owner of Bentley, 7 years old, who won first place.
First, second, and third-place winners were also awarded gift certificates to Hot Yoga Rockaway Beach.
“It’s great to be here at this event. All the dogs look great. We are sure it’s going to be a great success,” said pet owner Doug Meyer whose dog Oliver wore a sparkling blue sequined ensemble with gold trim.
In addition to the costume competition, the first 100 attendees were treated to special giveaways, including a tree planted in their dog’s name through “Trees for Pets” and peanut butter-flavored CBD chews from Green Coast Pet. Participants also enjoyed delicious treats for their dogs from Connors Canine Cookies, Jones Natural Dog Chews, and Charlee Bear Dog Treats.
The Rockaway Dog Parade, now a beloved tradition, continues to celebrate the bond between pets and their owners while supporting local charities. It remains a family-friendly event that highlights the community spirit of Far Rockaway.
As the parade wrapped up and the Pet Fair began, it was clear that the Rockaway community, along with their four-legged friends, had once again come together for a day of fun, creativity, and charitable giving — all under the banner of a cosmic canine celebration.
