Flushing Council Member Sandra Ung, with support from the Flushing Chinese Business Association and several local businesses, is celebrating their largest Thanksgiving Turkey Giveaway to date.
A total of 526 turkeys will be distributed to local community groups, nonprofits, food pantries, NYCHA residents, and constituents so that families across the district can enjoy a warm Thanksgiving meal.
“The generosity of our sponsors makes it possible for us to help families facing difficult economic times,” said Ung. “These free turkeys are a small gesture, but they bring a little peace of mind and one less thing to worry about during the holiday season. I am so grateful to everyone who helped make this year’s giveaway our biggest yet.”
Since taking office, Councilmember Ung has made the Turkey Giveaway an annual tradition, with the event expanding in scale each year. This year’s initiative was made possible by the support of several sponsors, including the Flushing Chinese Business Association, H Mart, Chinese American Real Estate Association (CAREA), NYC District Council of Carpenters, Bronx Spreading Love, GrubHub, and Food Bazaar of Douglaston.
“We started handing out turkeys 15 years ago, but these past few years we have been so happy to collaborate with Councilmember Ung to distribute these turkeys to the community,” said Peter Tu of the Flushing Chinese Business Association.
The turkeys were distributed to a number of local food pantries, tenant associations, senior centers, and families in need. Specific beneficiaries included the Chinese-American Planning Council, Taiwan Center, Rosenthal Selfhelp Senior Center, Friends Church, and St. Paul Chong Hasang Roman Catholic Church.
“In these challenging times, it’s more important than ever to support one another,” Councilmember Ung added. “Thanksgiving is a time to reflect on what we are grateful for and to extend a helping hand to friends and neighbors. I hope this small act of kindness brings comfort and joy to the families in our community this holiday season.”
