The holiday season has officially arrived in Glendale, with the Glendale Veterans Triangle on Myrtle and Cooper Ave. glowing brightly after five Christmas trees were decorated and lit on Sunday, Dec. 1.
The Kiwanis Club of Glendale’s annual tree-lighting ceremony brought festive cheer to the neighborhood, featuring live music, delicious refreshments, and a jolly visit from Santa.
Handmade ornaments were hung on the trees, courtesy of the children at the Mosaic School, and volunteers helped the committee set up for the event with two days of preparation.
The 104th Precinct Civilian Observation Patrol (G-COP) volunteered at the event, while members of The Salvation Army and Gotham Volunteer EMS also helped out.
City Council Member Joann Ariola came to speak to the attendees before they lined up to see Santa after being thanked for her work to help make this event successful.
Ariola has lived in the 32nd Council District all her life, which covers Glendale, Forest Park, Woodhaven, Ozone Park, Howard Beach, Spring Creek Park, Broad Channel, Rockaway Beach, Rockaway Park, Belle Harbor, Neponsit, Roxbury, Jacob Riis Park, Fort Tilden, and Breezy Point.
Santa arrived at the ceremony in style in ‘Candy Cane 1’, a special Christmas vehicle designed by East Coast Cars. Children had the opportunity to meet him and take photos while receiving a cuddly toy penguin.
The Salvation Army prepared a Hot Chocolate station for everyone in attendance, and McDonald’s provided an abundance of cookies. Ken Voisin played festive music for the crowd as they enjoyed the winter garden.
The event was made possible through generous donations from a variety of community partners and volunteers, which helped fund the trees, lights, and decorations. Nearly 30 organizations came together to make the occasion truly memorable.
The weather was ideal, with no hint of rain to dampen the festive spirit. Attendees bundled up to stay warm, and the hot chocolate proved to be a comforting treat for both volunteers and guests alike.
Glendale residents will be hoping for another successful year to continue the cherished tradition of Kiwanis-organized Christmas events.
