The Queens Economic Development Corporation (QEDC), a cornerstone of economic growth and innovation in the borough, has announced a major leadership transition.

After more than four decades of service, Executive Director Seth Bornstein will retire on July 1. Stepping into the role will be Ben Guttmann, a seasoned entrepreneur, educator, and community leader with extensive experience in small business and economic development in Queens.

Bornstein’s tenure with QEDC began in 1979, and his visionary leadership has played a transformative role in shaping the borough’s economic landscape. Bornstein began his career with QEDC as a program manager after working under two Queens Borough Presidents. During his tenure, he was instrumental in the creation of the borough’s first commercial revitalization programs. His efforts led to the creation of numerous local development corporations and business improvement districts, laying a strong foundation for sustained economic growth across the borough.

Bornstein became QEDC’s executive director in 2009, expanding the organization’s impact. Among his key achievements were the launch of the Entrepreneur Space, a commercial kitchen and business incubator in Long Island City; the creation of Made in Queens, which helps artisans market their goods; and the growth of the Queens Tourism Council, promoting the borough as a global destination.

“I am proud to have been with the Queens Economic Development Corporation in different roles since 1979,” said Bornstein. “Now it’s time to pass the torch. I have no doubt that under Ben Guttmann’s leadership, the dedicated QEDC team will continue its mission of serving the people of Queens in innovative ways that will strengthen our economy and make it an even better place to live, visit, and do business.”

Guttmann now takes the helm with a commitment to building on this legacy and driving QEDC into its next chapter.

A Sunnyside resident, Guttmann brings nearly 15 years of experience in small-business leadership, education, and tourism marketing. A co-founder of Digital Natives Group, a Queens-based marketing agency, Guttmann played a key role in the borough’s burgeoning tech sector. Following the agency’s acquisition in 2022, he served as a consultant for organizations such as the New York Small Business Development Center and Visit California.

Guttmann, an educator and author, has been a CUNY Baruch College faculty member since 2014, mentoring more than 1,000 business students. His book, Simply Put: Why Clear Messages Win – and How to Design Them (2023), was named best new business book by the Independent Book Publishers Association.

Guttmann has also been deeply involved in QEDC initiatives, joining the Board of Directors six years ago and serving as both an executive committee member and board president. Since 2019, he has co-organized and hosted Queens Tech Night, now part of the Queens Tech + Innovation Challenge, a program administered in partnership with the Borough President’s Office.

“Seth is leaving big shoes to fill, and I wish him the best in his well-earned retirement,” Guttmann stated. “I look forward to working alongside QEDC’s dedicated and talented staff to continue building a more prosperous and vibrant borough. It’s a true honor to be named the organization’s next Executive Director, and I’m thrilled and humbled to take on this role.”

Winston Crosswell, Vice President of QEDC’s Board of Directors, praised both leaders during the announcement. “Seth Bornstein is a true New York treasure. Over nearly five decades, he has done more to grow and support the Queens community than probably any other person and his impact will be felt for decades. We also welcome Ben Guttmann as our incoming executive director. Ben brings unique and valuable experience, energy, and insight, and we are confident he will guide QEDC into its next chapter.”

As QEDC prepares for this leadership transition, the organization continues its commitment to fostering economic growth, supporting local businesses, and enriching the lives of Queens residents. The change represents not just the end of an era but also the beginning of an exciting new chapter for one of New York City’s most dynamic economic development organizations.
