Assembly Member Nily Rozic has announced a $480,000 state grant for P.S. 173 in Fresh Meadows to fund the creation of a state-of-the-art science lab.
The announcement was made on the International Day of Girls in STEM, celebrated annually on Feb. 11, and was met with enthusiasm from both students and faculty.
The funding will support major renovations to the school’s current science classroom, transforming it into a dynamic STEM and hydroponics lab. The newly designed lab will feature cutting-edge technology that will allow students to explore subjects like plant science and sustainable agriculture.
Students will benefit from interactive whiteboards, microscopes connected to projected displays, access to extensive research databases, and optimal lighting for experiments. Additionally, the lab will be equipped with ample storage space to ensure safety and organization.
“I’m so excited to allocate state funding to this project, and I can’t wait to see the students of P.S. 173 using STEM concepts to cultivate their own plants and learn about the interconnectedness of ecosystems in their new science lab,” said Rozic. “As with all investments into our public schools, upgrades like these motivate students to be excited about learning and, in turn, shape the scientists and engineers of tomorrow.”
The International Day of Girls in STEM celebrates the role of women in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, and Rozic emphasized that initiatives like this one are critical in inspiring the next generation of innovators, particularly young girls, to pursue careers in these fields.
“We couldn’t be more thrilled and thankful to have been awarded this grant through Assembly Member Rozic. This funding will transform our elementary school science room into a vibrant STEM learning hub,” said Principal Danielle Tweedy. “Our students will thrive in this innovative space, exploring plant science in a hydroponics garden, engaging in hands-on experiments, and utilizing cutting-edge technology. This project is a heartfelt investment in our children’s future, inspiring them to become the next generation of scientists and lifelong learners.”
P.S. 173, located at 67th Ave. and 173rd St., serves students from Pre-Kindergarten through Grade 5. The school is committed to providing enriching, hands-on learning experiences, and the new lab will elevate that mission. The hydroponics garden will offer a unique and interactive way for students to learn about sustainability and environmental responsibility.
Rozic represents Assembly District 25, which includes the Queens neighborhoods of Flushing, Queensboro Hill, Hillcrest, Fresh Meadows, Oakland Gardens, Bayside, and Douglaston.
