A Springfield Gardens-based mosque held a vibrant Eid celebration on Sunday, April 13.
The New York Dawoodi Bohra community hosted an Eid celebration at their mosque located at 131-24 Springfield Blvd.
Several Queens elected officials and community stakeholders attended, including Sen John Liu, Council Member Nantasha Willaims, Dr. Crystal Bonds, superintendent of School District 29, Commanding Officer Captain Jean Sony Beauvoir from NYPD’s 116th Precinct, and Bishop Gregory Tucker from One Way Church of Christ.

Eid al-Fitr is a joyous celebration that marks the end of the holy month of Ramadan for Muslims. Muslims worldwide celebrate Eid, a symbolic day recognizing the breaking of the month-long fast they participate in during the holy month. During Eid, families, friends, and the community gather for a celebration and feast to break the fast. This year, Eid al-Fitr was on the evening of Saturday, March 29.

Attendees were treated to an Eid dinner, where they experienced Dawoodi Bohra cuisine and learned about the community’s philanthropic organizing efforts. The local Dawoodi Bohra community has organized food and holiday gift drives and tree planting as part of Project Rise, a global initiative by Dawoodi Bohras worldwide to improve access to education, healthcare, nutrition, water and sanitation, and environmental conservation.

Sen. Liu reflected on how the Dawoodi Bohra community has grown in size since he last celebrated Eid with them a few years ago. “Now, with patience and perseverance, you now have this beautiful community center here in Queens where we are now celebrating Eid together,” he said. “Eid reminds us of the importance of renewing bonds, breaking bread together, and strengthening the ties that bring people of all backgrounds closer. “
