State Senator Joseph P. Addabbo, Jr. and PS 60 in Woodhaven teamed up in May to collect food and personal care items for the Sacred Heart Parish Ministries food pantry in Glendale.

The drive, which ran for the entire month, saw drop-off locations established at both of Addabbo’s district offices and PS 60, allowing community members to contribute non-perishable food, hygiene products, and other essentials to assist local families in need. On Thursday, June 5, the donations were officially delivered to the pantry, where staff expressed deep gratitude for the outpouring of support.

“The generous donations will go a long way in helping families facing hardships,” Addabbo said in a statement. “It was inspiring to see our community come together and demonstrate such compassion. I am proud of what we achieved together, and I thank everyone who contributed to making this effort a success.”

The Sacred Heart pantry, operated through Sacred Heart Parish Ministries at 83-17 78th Ave., serves hundreds of individuals and families each month from Glendale and surrounding neighborhoods. Demand for food assistance has surged in recent years, especially following the COVID-19 pandemic and amid continued inflation on groceries and everyday goods.

Among the items collected were canned vegetables, pasta, rice, cereal, toiletries, soap, toothpaste, and feminine hygiene products. A notable contribution came from Martin Colberg, president of the Woodhaven Residents Block Association, who donated a large quantity of matzah.

PS 60, located at 91-02 88th Ave. in Woodhaven, helped spearhead the school-based leg of the campaign, encouraging students and families to participate as part of a broader lesson in civic engagement and community service.
