Free trees from Arbor Day Foundation

The National Arbor Day Foundation has made it easier to celebrate the tree planters’ holiday, on April 29, by giving away 10 shade trees to everyone who joins the foundation this month.

National Arbor Day is celebrated on the last Friday in April and is an observance that encourages tree planting and care.

Those who join the foundation this month will be shipped trees at the prime time for planting in April or May with enclosed planting instructions. The trees include red oak, weeping willow, thornless honey locust, sugar maple, river birch and bald cypress. The 6 to 12-inch trees are guaranteed to grow, or they will be replaced free of charge.

“These trees will provide shade in the summer and magnificent color throughout the fall,” said John Rosenow, chief executive and founder of the Arbor Day Foundation. “When you plant a tree, you’re giving a gift for future generations.”

A $10 contribution must be sent to the foundation by April 30 in order to become a member and receive the free trees.

The giveaway is a part of the foundation’s Trees for America campaign. Each year they distribute millions of trees, organize educational programs about conservation and help reforest fire-ravaged land across the nation. The foundation hopes to inspire others “to plant, nurture and celebrate trees.”

Membership also includes discounts on more than 100 varieties of plants, a guidebook about how to care for trees and a subscription to the foundation’s bimonthly newsletter.

The conservation and educational organization is the largest nonprofit membership group with over one million members and supporters dedicated to planting.

“By the simple act of planting trees, a person can make a positive impact on the earth and a deep, meaningful connection to nature,” said Rosenow.
