The kids at M.S. 294, the Bell Academy, located at 18-25 212th Street in Bayside, have a choice of nine “clusters” to study and one of them is “Quilt Making.”
A group of 7th graders from the school traveled with teacher Ms. Kiernan (standing) to Scheuer House at 26th Avenue and Corporal Kennedy Street recently, to distribute their quilts to the seniors there.
The kids (from left) Mabel Guan, Jasmine Singh, Johnny Lin, Emily Becker, Melanie Alvarez, Fae Kuhnen, Brittany Bernstein and Daniel Guan, worked on their projects all semester long, according to the school.
“I felt kind of bad that there weren’t enough quilts for every senior to get and they had to randomly give them out,” Lin said.
The other choices in the educational clusters include “Lights! Camera! Action!”; Doctors R Us; Future Entrepreneurs; Photography; Oral Histories; Sports and Health; Website Wonders and “Dance! Dance! Dance!”
All the groups complete projects and bring what they learned out to the community, for the benefit of others.
