Theater and music students of Queens College evidently were up to the task when they presented Rodgers and Hammerstein's “Carousel” this month at the school's Goldstein Theatre, under the direction of theater veteran Charles Repole.
The voices and the acting of the principals, and the professionalism of the tech crew and set designers, did full justice to the 1940s tale of Billy Bigelow (played by Larry Small) , a carnival carousel operator who kills himself as he is about to be arrested for robbery, but is allowed by the “Star Keeper” to return to Earth for one day after 15 years to give his teenage daughter, Louise (Farrah Connell) whom he never knew, and her mother, Julie Jordan (Tara Schmit) a new, hopeful outlook on their lives.
The cast's rendition of the classic “You'll Never walk Alone” made it difficult for most in the audience to keep their eyes dry, and the delivery of “June is Bustin' Out All Over” and “If I Loved You” rivaled the Broadway production.
