Bayside bakery makes art out of dough

For nearly 25 years the bakery near the Bayside stop on the Long Island Rail Road has given commuters, passersby and local residents the chance to stop in and grab a cup of coffee before catching a bus or train.

Anna Marretta and her husband Carl, who have lived in Whitestone for 35 years, have run their namesake business together since moving it to 41-06 Bell Blvd. in the 1970s. The two originally established their bakery about seven years before in a Flushing shop on Northern Boulevard, Anna Marretta said.

“We were interested in Bayside for a long time,” she said as she surveyed her now thriving family-run restaurant. “We'd come over and look around almost every weekend.

“Finally the real estate agent called us and told us there was an opportunity,” she said, “and we came in and opened our bakery.”
