LONG ISLAND CITY — Two Jackson Heights men were arrested for allegedly manufacturing counterfeit World Series clothing and with possessing more than $60,000 worth of it, Queens District Attorney Richard Brown announced Tuesday.
Bing Wong, 32, of 41-25 76th St., and Alfredo Hidalgo-Sanchez, 34, of 108-42 39th Ave., both were charged with trademark counterfeiting, criminal possession of forgery devices and criminal possession of a forged instrument, Brown said. They each face up to seven years in prison if convicted.
Wong, the owner of a business, and Sanchez, his worker, allegedly manufactured counterfeit World Series clothing out of a warehouse at 42-33 24th St. in Long Island City, the DA said.
Long Island man convicted of anti-gay crime in Queens
KEW GARDENS — A Long Island man was found guilty of a hate-crime assault last week, the first anti-gay hate-crime conviction in Queens County under the new Hate Crimes Act, Queens District Attorney Richard Brown said.
Francisco Fasardo, 20, of Westbury was convicted following a non-jury trial of third-degree assault as a hate crime before Supreme Court Justice Barry Kron, the DA said. He faces up to four years in prison when sentenced Dec. 12.
Fasardo shouted anti-gay remarks to a man on Roosevelt Avenue on Dec. 21, 2000. He then approached the victim and repeated the remarks before shoving and hitting him in the face, Brown said.
The new Hate Crimes Act, which took effect Oct. 8, 2000, enhances penalties on crimes where a victim is selected because of race, color, national origin, ancestry, gender, religion, religious practice, age, disability or sexual orientation.
Robber uses note to steal cash from Rego Park bank
REGO PARK — An unidentified man in his 20s robbed the Chase Manhattan Bank at 71-04 Woodhaven Blvd. Friday, police said.
The robber entered the bank at about 11:40 a.m. and fled with an undetermined amount of cash after passing a note to a teller, police said.
He did not display a weapon. No one was hurt.
Police were investigating.
Man dies after shot in head in St. Albans
ST. ALBANS — A 25-year-old man died last Thursday after being shot in the head, police said.
The unidentified victim, who was shot on the corner of 196th Street and 119th Avenue, was taken to Mary Immaculate Hospital where he was first listed in serious condition, police said.
He died at 11:55 p.m., police said.
Police were looking for the attacker.
Firefighters quickly bring S. Jamaica blaze under control
SOUTH JAMAICA — Firefighters brought a one-alarm house fire under control in less than 40 minutes early Tuesday morning, an FDNY spokesman said.
The blaze was reported in the attic of a two-story house at 114-31 135th St. at 3 a.m., the spokesman said, and it was brought under control at 3:43 a.m.
One firefighter was taken to Jamaica Hospital with dizziness, he said.
The cause of the fire was under investigation.
Sunnyside woman arrested in green-card, apartment scam
SUNNYSIDE — A Sunnyside women was arrested for allegedly collecting more than $100,000 in an apartment and green-card scam, Queens District Attorney Richard Brown said this week.
Altagracia Simo, 48, of 50-39 41st St., was charged with several counts of grand larceny, scheming to defraud, issuing a bad check, and petty larceny, the D.A. said. She faces up to seven years in prison if convicted.
Simo allegedly posed as a landlady or property managing agent, defrauding at least 14 people out of about $67,000 by soliciting deposits for apartments over which she had no control, the DA said. She also allegedly received $38,500 from three people after promising to submit applications and expedite the processing of resident alien cards, which she never did, Brown said.
Richmond Hill man charged with DWI in firehouse crash
BROOKLYN — A Richmond Hill man was charged with drunken driving after crashing into a Brooklyn firehouse early Sunday morning, police said.
Timothy Winn, 29, of 97-31 117th St., was arrested after he allegedly drove his vehicle through the closed garage door of the FDNY firehouse of Engine Company 236 at about 3 a.m., police said.
One firefighter was taken to Jamaica Hospital for bruises and lacerations to his legs, police said.
Construction worker dies after falling in Woodhaven
WOODHAVEN — A construction worker died Tuesday after falling from scaffolding along the side of a building, police said.
The worker was installing vinyl siding at 85-77 87th St. when he apparently fell around 3:10 p.m., police said.
He was pronounced dead at the scene.
$5,000 in cash stolen from Flushing church
FLUSHING — About $5,000 was stolen from a collection plate at St. Michael’s Church at 136-76 41st Ave. Saturday, police said.
The church was open to the public at the time of the theft, which was around 7:15 a.m., police said.
Police were investigating.
Teen in critical condition after hit by car in Glendale
GLENDALE — A teenage girl was listed in critical condition at the surgical intensive care unit of Elmhurst Hospital after being struck by a car last week, hospital spokesman Dario Centorcelli said.
The teen stepped onto Myrtle Avenue near 70th Street around 5 p.m. Saturday when she was struck by a passing car and hit her head against the windshield, neighbors said.
