The Our Lady of the Snows fifth-grade girls ‘A’ team scored more than 30 points for the third straight game as the team defeated St. Mel’s of Flushing, 35-12. The win improved the OLS record to 3-0. Once again, the Snows’ offensive attack featured balanced scoring, as for the third straight game, seven different girls put points on the board.
Tina Khiani led all scorers for the second straight game with 10 points. Adara Simonelli and Michelle Gasperetti tallied eight points each, Nicole Weinman added four points and Nicole Kaouris, Jessica Wrynn and Kaitlin Frangella rounded out the scoring for OLS. Christine Wrynn also played an excellent all-around game, but her shots just wouldn’t fall. The team will travel to Whitestone on Saturday to face St. Luke’s.
In other OLS girls' action, the Bantam ‘B’ squad defeated St. Anastasia, as Jamie Hannigan led all scorers. Coach Luciani’s Intermediate team went down to the wire against St. Fidelis before dropping a 28-24 decision at PS 191. Coach Dodd’s Intermediates defeated Queen of Peace behind the scoring of Ashley Dodd and Kerry Hentrich. Angie Lagasca, Keri Harrison and Kayla Englot also contributed to the short-handed squads’ victory. The Bantam ‘A’ team suffered its first loss of the season on the road at Our Lady of Lourdes in Queens Village.
Intermediates defeat OLBS, 25-16
The OLS boys Intermediate (Sweeney) team defeated the Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament ‘P’ team, 25-16, in its first game of the year Sunday. After getting off to a slow start trailing, 6-1 after the first quarter, OLS shutout OLBS in the second quarter to pull to within 6-5 at halftime. OLS did go to the foul line 10 times in the half ,only making one free throw.
The third quarter began just as the game did for OLS. They only managed four points in the quarter to trail 12-9 after three. OLS really turned up the pressure at the beginning of the fourth with a man-to-man, full-court press, which forced OLBS into many turnovers and easy baskets for Snows.
The combination of Anthony Simmons (six points) and Ashton Mills led the defensive charge back for Snows. Brain Amorese (two points) and David Marrero (two points) were a force on the defensive backboard. Eric Miller led Snows with a game high 13 points. Brian White also had a bucket to close out the scoring for OLS.
Snows plays again on Tuesday, Nov. 13 at 7 p.m. at PS 191 against St. Fidelis.
Sixth-grade boys top St. Ann’s, 10-4
The Our Lady of the Snows sixth-grade boys basketball team, coached by Ed Paroulek and Rich Biscotti, opened its season with a 10-4 victory over a tough St. Ann’s team. The team picked up right where it left off last season by playing smothering defense and showing a much-improved team-oriented offense. The offense was led by Ryan Paroulek and Jonathan Dupuy, who each scored four points, and Anthony Civitano, who chipped in two. The defensive pressure was applied by Brian Biscotti, Arnab Mitra, Leroy Herbert, Billy Fitzgerald, Kevin McMurray and Nicholas Walker. The boys appear poised to improve on last year’s strong season, which included a playoff berth.
