Keep your special day safe, healthy

By David S. Karan, MD, P.C.

The bride-to-be wants everything to go right on her special day. Her gown is super special, her hair is shaped and styled with special care. Facial make up is also often applied with style and care.

Many brides who are not blessed with 20/20 vision and whom nature and genetics have required corrected lenses, will often chose to be without eyeglasses on this special day. For the beautiful bride who depends on her future husband or her parents on this day of ceremony to see appropriately this can sometimes increase the typical stress inherent on such a complex day.

Over the past few years all of the high style designers such as Fendi and Christian Dior have gone into the field of the formal eyewear, and some brides may find a compatible style to suite their taste. But the considerable cost of designer couture and the photographic glare in the wedding pictures makes this choice secondary.

Many other brides plan in advance and will have contact lenses prescribed and fit properly. Supervised by an eye medical doctor, this can be an easy solution for an otherwise blurry memory.

In the past few years, laser sculpting of the cornea or front of the eye has offered another solution to enjoying a crystal clear day, allowing nature’s beauty to shine through. This has to be thought of well in advance to be applicable on the wedding day.

A common bridal complication seen by ophthalmologists is the frequent overuse of eye cosmetics. When contact lenses are worn this can result in a corneal abrasion, or simply a teary and painful eye.

In my opinion, the average bride is beautiful enough and a happier and more joyful day will be achieved just letting nature’s natural beauty shine thanks to corrective surgery.

Here's to a special day to the bride and here's to using our common sense to stay healthy, see well and enjoy.
