Glen Oaks Little League to hold opening day ceremonies

The Glen Oaks Little League will hold opening day ceremonies Saturday, April 5, at 9:30 a.m. The event will be at Tenney Park, at the intersection of 260th Street and 74th Avenue, and will kick off another year of baseball and softball.

This year the Glen Oaks Little League is celebrating its 52nd year of Little League Baseball.

The league, originally known as the Bellerose Little League, was founded in 1952 by Larry Feigenbaum and Daniel Hennesey. It started with just a few boys and a couple of teams, and it has grown over the years to 30 teams with 402 boys and girls.

The league prides itself on being a part of the community and has continued to operate thanks to local volunteers and the generous donations of local merchants.

Holding with tradition, the boys and girls will march in their uniforms through the Glen Oaks community, led by a marching band, cheerleaders from Our Lady of the Snows, the New York Police Department, the Glen Oaks Ambulance Corp. and Ladder Company 251 of the New York Fire Department.

Sen. Frank Padavan (R-Bellerose), Assemblyman Mark Weprin (D-Bayside), Ann-Margaret Carrozza (D-Bayside) and former City Councilman Sheldon Leffler are also slated to attend.

Following the parade all children will be treated to free hot dogs courtesy of Boarshead Gers Provisions. Once again, the league will add to the festivities by including a raffle thanks to donations of area businesses. Following the festivities, the league will do what is has done for the past 51 years, that is, play ball, with the boys’ major division as well as the girls’ senior division starting off the season.
