Greg Polkowski pitched a no-hitter to lead the Whitestone Wanderers 12-year-old team to a summer-season opening 8-0 win over the Albertson Astros Saturday.
The only thing separating Polkowski from a perfect game was a lead-off walk in the first inning. The offense was led by Mike Dinoto, who had three hits, Joey Depperman, Vincent Florido, Mike Lowrey, John Massa, Anthony Polito and Brandon Rosenthal, who had one hit apiece.
In the nightcap of the doubleheader, the Wanderers scored two runs in the first inning and six runs in the second en route to a 13-7 win. Lowrey was 2-for-2 with a triple, two RBIs and a walk, Florido had a double and four RBIs and Nick Zavattieri was the winning pitcher.
The Whitestone Wanderers 13-year-old team opened their summer with a doubleheader split with the Long Island A’s.
The A’s scored three runs in the third and added a run in both the fourth and fifth innings to take a 5-0 lead. The Wanderers rallied to get within 5-3 and had runners on second and third but couldn’t get closer.
In the nightcap the Wanderers scored five runs in the first inning and scored in each of the next three innings in a 12-5 win.
Emmanuel Fishelman, Rob Liquori and Chris Moreno had three hits apiece while Kevin Brown, Carlo Cataldo and Edward Park each had two hits.
Manpreet Singh pitched a complete game and went 3-for-3 at the plate as the Whitestone Wanderers 11-year-old team beat the Long Island Lightning, 9-6 in their opener.
Devin Feranti and Joey Franchini each had two hits and scored two runs. Joey Bernardez, Zach Filippi, Joe Marin, Justin Reis and Pat Thompson all had one hit apiece.
The Wanderers lost a heartbreaker in the second game when the Lightning scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to win 8-7.
Franchini and Singh led the offense with two hits apiece and Mike Bacoti, Michael Dallal, Aris Stilidiadis and Reis each had a hit.
The Whitestone Wanderers 9-year-olds opened their season with a thrilling 9-9 tie with the Long Island Lightning. Greg Massa and Mike Rosaario pitched three innings each and combined for 13 strikeouts.
Michael Cheesman was 4-for-4 with a triple and three RBIs, Massa had three hits and Eric Mirkov had two hits and a walk.
Eric Espinoza, Jamie Gunkel, Frank Marin and Rosario had a hit apiece and Marin turned in the defensive play of the day when he took a throw that was off line and dove to tag the runner before he reached the plate.
