Carole Himmelman

Career Counselor at Flushing High School
Flushing

JOB: Himmelman, 36, is in her fourth year as a guidance counselor helping students in any way possible - from landing them internships to applying for college. “I try to help them formulate a positive outlook on their future and provide them with inspiration and motivation,” she said. Himmelman earned both her undergraduate degree in creative writing and Masters degree in school counseling from Hunter College.

FAMILY FACTS: Himmelman and husband Joe, 39, have been married for eight years. They have three children: Kristelle, 16, from Joe’s previous marriage, Caleb, 4, and Chloe, 2.

CAREER GOAL: “There are a lot of career goals I want to accomplish in my lifetime. At Flushing, I’d like to see the career counseling center take off, to get a lot of internships for our students so they can make well-informed decisions about their future paths and which colleges to attend.
“But if I had a dream, it would be to open a community counseling center in a place that didn’t have those kinds of resources we could provide.”

GRIPES: “I really don’t have any. I enjoy what I do. I love working with kids and I have a great environment to work in at Flushing.”

PROUDEST MOMENT: “I have a lot of them. But there is one person that sticks out in my mind. There was this girl - I won’t mention her name - at Flushing. When I first met her, she cut classes and wore clothes that revealed just about everything on her body. “We worked with her a lot and when she graduated she got into St. John’s University’s Higher Education Opportunity Program (HEOP). She just came so far and now she’s a mentor to other kids.”
