Molloy wins Easter softball tournament

Because of scheduling conflicts, Molloy hadn’t played in the Uptown Softball Classic in the Bronx the last several seasons. The 16-team tournament, held yearly during the Easter break, usually features the best teams from throughout the tri-state area.
This year, the Stanners found time to participate in the tournament and won the entire thing, going 6-0 in three days of tournament play, with No. 2 starter Kristen Torres earning three victories. Torres, a junior, filled in admirably for the staff ace Kayley Ferran, away on family vacation after the quarterfinals.
They capped off the brilliant performance by dominating Walton, 10-1. Junior Jackie Rafferty led the charge with three hits and three RBIs and Tiffany Ott added three hits and drove in two runs. Torres went the distance, allowing just one run and striking out 11. In the semifinals, Molloy outlasted division rival Stella Maris, 7-6 in 10 innings, when Rafferty’s single plated Kerri McLean.
But it was in the quarterfinals that gave the Stanners the needed momentum. Molloy (15-2, 7-1 GCHSAA) edged Suffern, 2-1, on McLean’s two-run homer, her first round tripper of the season. Kayley Ferran earned the win, striking out six. “That was probably one of the highlights of the season,” Molloy Coach Maureen Rosenbaum said. “After we won that game, with the adrenaline we came out of the game with, I don’t think they could be or wanted to be stopped.”
