New sailing program at Meadow Lake

Ever get the sudden urge to go sailing as you stroll through Flushing Meadows-Corona Park? Well, here’s your chance.
Councilman John Liu and The American Small Craft Association (TASCA) recently announced a training program for New Yorkers interested in learning how to sail on Meadow Lake in Flushing Meadows-Corona Park. A basic sailing course, available to anybody 16 years of age or older, will be offered by TASCA during a spring and summer session.
“TASCA is offering an exciting opportunity for New Yorkers to not only learn to sail, but spend quality recreational time at Meadow Lake in Flushing Meadow Park, Queens - one of the crown jewels of our City’s public park system,” Councilman Liu said.
The on-the-water sessions are seven consecutive weekly classes on Meadow Lake in Flushing Meadows-Corona Park. Students can select any day of the week, from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., or Saturday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The day selected by the student remains the same for the ensuing seven weeks. The spring session will run from April 29 through June 24 and the summer program will go from July 8 through August 26.
Students in both sessions must take a swim test on May 21, 2006 and two classroom meetings: April 29, 2006 from 10:00 a.m. to 1 p.m. and May 13 from 1:00 p.m. to 4 p.m. Upon completion, students are awarded a TASCA Basic Sailing Certificate. A fee of $275 is charged to cover the cost of teaching materials, the boats, and their maintenance, insurance, and facilities.
TASCA is a volunteer organization working in cooperation with the City’s Department of Parks & Recreation. All students who successfully complete the course are offered membership in TASCA. All members receive free instruction in intermediate and advanced sailing and the opportunity to join club members in many other recreational and social activities.
