When Camille Sedayao, Francis Lewis’s ace pitcher, took her warm-up pitches, she was happy to see the blazing sun above. When it is hot, humid, and sticky, Sedayao tends to be on her game.
“I love the sun,” she said. “It just gets me energized. It was a good advantage [for me].” Sedayao tossed a complete-game four-hitter, leading the Patriots to a 2-1 home win over Newtown last Thursday afternoon.
The last time the two teams met, on April 3rd, the Patriots knocked Sedayao around for 12 runs in a rain-drenched, walk-laden, error-filled performance.
However, in this meeting, Francis Lewis (6-2, Queens A) played their first errorless game of the year. Newtown (3-7, Queens A) rapped into 15 groundouts, including two double plays. “This is who we are,” said Francis Lewis catcher Jessica Payero, who singled twice and scored the game’s first run. “We knew we could beat them.”
After second baseman Amanda Kesner singled, stole second and scored a run on catcher Angela Lam’s wild throw that skidded into left centerfield, the Patriots held a seemingly comfortable two-run lead going into the final frame. But after Sedayao retired two of the first three Pioneers, she lost control and walked the bases loaded. After working fast she was now bringing the seventh inning to a halt, gazing skyward and kicking at the dirt surrounding the mound. None of her teammates came to comfort her, nor did she want them to. “I needed time to breathe,” she said.
After several deep gasps for air, she retired the Newtown left fielder, Angie Siriban, on a chopper down the third base line, Sedayao’s fifth fielding chance of the day. “Once she calms herself down, she breathes and hits her target,” Payero said.
Added Francis Lewis Manager Bryan Brown, “I knew with Camille out there, she would find a way to get it done.”
