The Center Against Domestic Violence (CADV), an organization that provides shelter and services to victims of domestic violence and abuse, is holding an art exhibition and auction, on Monday, May 8th.
Entitled “Drawing the Line Against Domestic Violence,” the event will be held at the Helen Mills Theater, 137-139 West 26th Street in Manhattan. Proceeds will benefit the children’s art programs provided at CADV shelters.
“Art is often the best way - and sometimes it’s the only way - for young people to express feelings about domestic violence they have witnessed,” said Judith Kahan, Chief Executive Officer of the CADV. “The Center’s arts programs provide an invaluable window into even the youngest children’s hearts. The artwork these youngsters create show the trained counselors who work with them at our shelters how they internalize the violence and abuse at home.”
The CADV opened New York State’s first shelter to serve battered women and their children in 1976. The center now operates three shelters and offers extensive counseling and education for domestic violence victims, day-care, and school-based programs for children in grades 6 through 12 to help instill in these children the necessary tools to build and sustain healthy and respectful relationships.
Acclaimed artist Louis Bourgeois, honorary chair for the event, is donating an original piece as well as 100 other artists including Patrick McMullan, Lee Apt, Shane Neufeld, and Kristin Anderson, to name a few.
The exhibition and auction will feature various forms of art including photography pieces, paintings, sculptures, drawings, prints, etchings, mixed media presentations, and lithographs. Sponsors like Frederic Fekkai, Cobra beer, Williams and Hill, Choclatique and Air Force nutrisoda are showing their support by donating everything from goodie bags to dulce de leche.
Tickets to “Drawing the Line Against Domestic Violence,” are $75 per person. VIP tickets start at $250 a person and sponsorship packages begin at $500. For tickets and information or a full listing of participating artists, please contact Rona Solomon at the CADV at 718-254-9134.
