Malik Boothe, the tenacious Christ the King point guard, will be staying in Queens after graduating next June. The pass-first, defensive-minded 5-foot-8 guard gave St. John's University a verbal commitment Tuesday evening, August 15.
Boothe, who averaged 6.5 points- and 8 assists-a-game in leading the Royals to the Catholic League city and state championship games, picked the Red Storm over Clemson, Xavier, Rhode Island, LIU and Providence. Boothe is just the latest lead guard to attend the Jamaica school, following in the footsteps of Omar Cook and Erick Barkley.
Not the big-time scorer that typically gains acclaim on the prep level, Boothe does his best work in crunch-time and on the defensive end of the floor.
Longtime Christ the King Coach Bob Oliva ranks him in the top five of all-time-on-the-ball defenders at the Middle Village school, high praise considering his small stature compared to the others, such as Miami Dolphins cornerback Will Poole.
