Jack Thompson

Jack Thompson, a former President of the Cambria Heights Civic Association passed away August 17.
He was an ardent spokesman for his community. From the trees blooming on the streets of Cambria Heights to the soon-to-be-opened Cambria Heights Library, Thompson’s achievements helped improve his neighborhood. He worked successfully with the members of the Civic Association and local elected officials.
Thompson was a veteran of the United States Army, and was also retired from New York City Department of Education.
He was an active member of many advisory boards which dealt with the Jamaica Post Office, Verizon, Jamaica Hospital, Universal Pre-K, and the Human Resources Administration.
Thompson received many accolades from organizations like the Queens Federation of Churches, Haitian Americans United for Progress, Eastern Queens Alliance, The Cambria Heights Civic Association, The American Heart Association, Queens Borough Community College, Congressman Gregory Meeks, State Senator Malcolm Smith, Assemblymember Barbara Clark and Councilmember Leroy Comrie.
He was an honorary member of the Cambria Heights Kiwanis Club and one of the founders of the South East Queens Community Partnership, established to fight the scourge of drugs.
He is survived by his wife Hortense, daughter Robyn, son Michael and four grandchildren.
Thompson was laid to rest on August 24. Funeral services were held at the Cambria Heights Community Church. Interment was at Calverton Cemetery.
