New York State has passed a new bill that will include the diagnosis and treatment of autism spectrum disorder in insurance coverage.
Under Chapter 557, autism spectrum disorder, which is a neurobiological disorder, will also include Asperger syndrome, Rett’s syndrome and pervasive development disorder. Autism can effect that way a person communicates, learns and interacts with others. Early diagnosis is important in assisting with the disorder.
“Autism is one of the fastest growing disorders in the United States,” said Assemblywoman Audrey Pheffer. “It is important that we not only raise awareness of these conditions, but also that children are receiving the diagnosis and treatments necessary for their health and well-being.”
The statute will go into effect on January 1, 2007 and will require New York State health insurance policies to cover the treatment and diagnosis of autism disorder.
“This new law is a vital first step in promoting awareness and treatment for these disorders,” Pheffer said. “I will continue to work with my colleagues to examine not only insurance coverage issues but also to look at the programs provided for treatment and find methods to possibly improve access to and content of these programs statewide.”
Complaints regarding the wrongful denial of coverage can be filed with the New York State Insurance Department through its website, www.ins.state.ny.us. Help can also be obtained by call the Insurance Help Hotline at 1-866-NYINSHELP (1-866-694-6743).
